Cheyne Has Left the Building.

A Chance for Growth and Innovation for the Servite Friars

Published

In a surprising turn of events, Offensive Coordinator Cheyne Lacanaria has decided to leave the Servite Friars and take on a new role as the Offensive Coordinator at East Kentwood HS in Michigan. Lacanaria’s decision comes as he and his wife, Danielle, look to start a family of their own and seek a more affordable cost of living in his home state.

While Lacanaria’s departure may come as a disappointment to some, it is important to view this as an opportunity for growth within the Servite Friars program. Head Coach Chris Reinert, in an email to the team, expressed his gratitude for Lacanaria’s contributions and wished him and Danielle the best in their future endeavors.

Reinert also emphasized his commitment to finding the absolute best person in America to lead the offense of the Servite Friars. He envisions a coach who will establish strong relationships with the players, provide mentorship and guidance, and implement an innovative, well-organized, and exciting offense that will consistently put points on the board.

Despite Lacanaria’s departure, the structural foundation of the offense will remain largely unchanged. As the Offensive Coordinator, Lacanaria was responsible for executing Coach Reinert’s personal vision for the offense. This vision includes an Air Raid Offense with the ability to run both zone and gap schemes, utilize RPOs (Run-Pass Options), incorporate a complimentary screen game, and implement passing schemes inspired by the Mike Leach Air Raid system.

Coach Reinert reassured the team that they will continue to identify themselves as a team with these offensive principles. The departure of Lacanaria presents an opportunity for the Servite Friars to build upon the existing foundation and further refine their offensive strategies.

With the search for a new Offensive Coordinator in full swing, the Servite Friars are brimming with excitement at the prospect of welcoming a fresh perspective and new ideas that hold the potential to catapult the team to even greater heights of success. This exciting opportunity promises to foster growth, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence on the football field.

The Portal is Not the Problem!

The transfer portal is not the issue for aspiring collegiate athletes; it’s the lack of Power 5 talent.

The transfer portal has been a hot topic in the world of High School and collegiate athletics, with many pointing fingers at it as the root of issues for aspiring athletes.
However, the reality is that the lack of Power 5 talent is the true challenge for many high school students looking to make their mark at the next level.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable decrease in Division 1 offers available for athletes who may not fit the mold of a Power 5 player.
While D2 and NAIA schools still actively recruit, the competition for spots at these institutions is fierce. Not only do athletes need to showcase their skills on the field,
but they also need to maintain strong academic performance to be considered for these opportunities.

Looking at the top players from recent graduating classes, it’s clear that many have either not played or transferred to different programs. The expectation that a player must
be ready to perform at a high level from day one of college has shifted, leaving little room for development over time.

While the landscape of collegiate athletics may be changing, there is still hope for athletes to succeed at schools that may not have the same name recognition as Power 5 institutions.
Programs like Fresno State, San Diego State, and San Jose State are filled with talent that rivals that of larger D1 schools, providing opportunities for athletes to excel and potentially
transfer up to higher levels of competition.

In the end, the key for aspiring collegiate athletes is to accept their situation, work towards their goals, and be open to the changing dynamics of the recruiting process.
The days of big-name schools dominating the college sports scene may be coming to an end, but this shift opens up new opportunities for athletes to shine at schools that may not
have been on their radar before. Embracing these changes and adapting to the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics will be crucial for success in the future.
