Is Your Head Coach Playing the Same Tricks as Cell Phone Companies?

New players get the best deal while returners are left on the bench

Isn’t it funny how new cell phone customers always get the best deals while loyal customers are left in the dust? New customers get new phones, unlimited minutes, no data caps or annual contracts. And guess what? This phenomenon isn’t just limited to the world of cell phone providers, oh no. Football coaches are also guilty of the ole bait and switch. They’re constantly on the prowl for new talent, or should I say “customers,” to boost their team’s chances of success. They offer more targets, more carries and more minutes, not to mention free tuition in order to convince players to make the switch. The higher your profile the more they will slurp.

And, just like those sneaky cell phone companies, football coaches lure in new players with alluring promises and deals, hoping to convince them to ditch their current school, and join their team. It’s all about attracting that fresh talent and securing long-term success, you know?

Can you hear me now?

But what about the loyal customers, the ones who have stuck around through thick and thin? You know the ones that listened when the coach said “Trust the process”. Well my friend, they don’t get the same attention. The cell companies don’t think that these loyal customers will switch providers, so why bother offering them anything special? Or said another way, why bother investing and developing them. As long as the school gets it’s football fees and tuition, life is good. It’s a brilliant strategy, really. Get your money for nothing and your kicks for free!

Yeah, it’s unfair, but hey, so is life. And it’s just the way things work in both the cell phone industry and the world of football recruiting. But don’t lose hope! It’s always worth a shot to explore your options and reach out to your current provider. Who knows, maybe they’ll surprise you with some loyalty or more minutes. But hey, no guarantees, my friend. It’s just the way the game is played.

In the world of sports, the relationship between a player and coach is crucial. Trust and respect are key components that can make or break a team’s success. While some coaches believe that their position of authority automatically earns them the trust and respect of their players, the new norm in sports is shifting towards a different perspective.

With the rise of more freedom of movement for players, the introduction of the transfer portal for college athletes, and the opportunity for athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL), the dynamic between players and coaches is evolving. Players now have more agency and power to make decisions that are in their best interest, rather than solely relying on the guidance of their coaches.

This shift highlights the importance of coaches earning the trust and respect of their players through their actions and leadership, rather than simply expecting it based on their title. Building a strong relationship based on mutual respect and understanding can lead to a more cohesive and successful team dynamic.

As the sports landscape continues to evolve, coaches must adapt to these changes and recognize the importance of fostering a positive and trusting relationship with their players. By embracing this new norm and understanding the value of earning trust and respect, coaches can create a supportive and empowering environment for their athletes to thrive.

At the high school level, coaches play a crucial role in shaping the lives of young athletes. The relationship between a coach and player goes beyond the field or court, as coaches often serve as mentors and role models for their players. By challenging their players, holding them accountable, and showing them love and support, coaches can help young athletes develop not only as players but as individuals as well. This level of trust and respect is essential for creating a positive and successful sports environment for all involved.
